Violist Martin Moriarty is one of Ireland’s foremost musicians and is in high demand as a soloist and as a chamber musician both at home and abroad. Martin has received multiple awards and prizes including the Amsterdam Viola Festival Competition and the Flax Trust Award at the Clandeboye Chamber Music Festival as well as winning prizes in renowned Irish competitions. As a soloist he has performed with orchestras including the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta under conductors Pavel Baleff and Ed Spanjaard.

Performances and Collaborations

Martin has performed in venues including Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and St John’s Smith Square, London, Franz Liszt Academy of Music Budapest, Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Brussels, Ishibashi Memorial Hall, Tokyo as well as every major concert hall in Ireland.

Festival invitations include Verbier, West Cork, GAIA, Schiermonnikoog, Pablo Casals, Grachtenfestival, Tsinandali, NCH Chamber Music Gathering, Freden, Allegro Vivo, Interlaken Classics, Sligo International, RIAM Internacional Concert Series, Rotterdam Chamber Music Society Series, Music for Galway and Ortús Chamber Music Festivals.

Martin has collaborated with artists including Nobuko Imai, Barry Douglas, François Guye, Philippe Graffin, Daniel Rowland, Maxim Rysanov, Garth Knox, István Várdai, Finghin Collins, Miklós Lukács, Candida Thompson, Robert Kulek, Wenting Kang, Rosalind Ventris, Dana Zemtsov, Diamanda Dramm, Caspar Vos, Ella van Poucke, Maja Bogdanovic, Julien Hervé, Gwendolyn Masin, the Vogler and Michelangelo String Quartets.

With a great passion for contemporary music, Martin has worked alongside and premiered works by Sam Perkin, Seán Doherty, Raymond Dean, John Kinsella, Oene Van Geel, Sebastian Fagerlund, Thomas Beijer and Robert Coleman.

Martin regularly plays with orchestras such as the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and guest principal viola for Camerata Freden. Martin is a former member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and former principal violist of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and the Young European Strings Chamber Orchestra.

Education and Masterclasses

Martin studied at the Young European Strings School of Music and the Royal Irish Academy of Music before moving to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam where he graduated from his Bachelor Degree with distinction studying with Nobuko Imai and Marjolein Dispa. He is currently in his Masters Degree studying with Veit Hertenstein at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Germany.

Martin attended the Verbier Festival Academy in 2018 and 2019. Here he received masterclass from Nobuko Imai, Tabea Zimmermann, Lawrence Power, Antoine Tamestit, Lars Andres Tomter, Isabel Charisius, Gérard Caussé, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Ferenc Rados, Pamela Frank, Klaus Hellwig, András Keller and Michel Béroff.

Martin has also attended the West Cork Chamber Music Festival Chamber Music Masterclasses many times and has worked with the Vanbrugh, Borodin, Danish, Zaïde, Doric, Cremona, Artis, Pavel Has, Zemlinsky, Chiaroscuro and Signum String Quartets, Marc Coppey, Lise Berthaud, Liana Gourdija and Miranda Cuckson.
